Ceylon land, sri lanka ceylon and ceylon sri lanka are the same island. Ceylon tea and true cinnamon still use the historic name; we run tours, not a grocery shop. Flight time from Frankfurt and direct flights to Sri Lanka
A typical Frankfurt to Colombo (CMB) flight is about 9.5 to 11 hours in the air on a direct or one stop routing. Direct flights exist seasonally or on selected daysalways confirm the current timetable with the airline. Many guests connect via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or via SriLankan Airlines. Munich, Dusseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg usually involve a connection. We do not quote airfares. Once you have dates, we quote the ground tour and plan the first hotel night around your actual landing, including overnight arrivals.
Colombo airport (CMB) after a long haul landing
Bandaranaike International Airport sits at Katunayake, not in downtown Colombo. Negombo beach hotels are 20 to 40 minutes from the terminal and suit late European arrivals. Colombo city is typically 45 to 90 minutes. West coast hotels around Kalutara/Waskaduwa are about 1.5 to 2 hours; Galle Fort 2.5 to 3.5 hours via the Southern Expressway. Do not drive to Sigiriya the same night after a Frankfurt red eye unless you insist. Most German guests sleep in Negombo or on the west coast and start the Cultural Triangle the next morning.
Entry requirements for German passport holders
German nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding. From 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA is free for 40 listed countries including Germany, for 30 days with double entryyou still apply in advance at eta.gov.lk. Free does not mean visa on arrival without paperwork. Keep about six months’ passport validity and proof of onward travel. Apply only on the official site. Best time, weather and rainy season
There is no single best month. December to March is peak for west and south beaches (Bentota, Mirissa, Weligama, Galle). May to September often favours the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) and is strong for Cultural Triangle sightseeing and dry season safari in Yala or Udawalawe. The southwest monsoon (roughly May to September) is the “Regenzeit” people mean for Colombo, Galle and the southwest. The north east monsoon hits the east later in the year. A private itinerary routes you to the drier coast for your dates. Sri Lanka is UTC+5:304.5 hours ahead of Germany in winter, 3.5 hours during Central European Summer Time.
One week vs a two week Sri Lanka round trip
Seven days on the ground covers Sigiriya Lion Rock, Kandy, Ella, a safari and a beach finish. Ten to fourteen days is the rising German search “Rundreise Sri Lanka 2 Wochen”: slower tea country, a second wildlife morning (Yala or Udawalawe), Galle Fort, Mirissa or Weligama, and optionally the east coast in the right season. Beach only all inclusive (RIU style) is a different product. If you want culture and wildlife as well as swimming, a chauffeur circuit plus two or three beach nights beats a single resort week.
Safety and travelling with children
On typical holiday routes Sri Lanka is generally safe with ordinary precautions. Petty theft in crowds is more likely than violent crime. Unofficial “guides” at temples and tuk tuk shop detours are the usual nuisances. A booked ahead private driver removes most of that. Family trips work well with shorter driving days, hotel pools, Udawalawe elephants and a beach finish. Check current Auswartiges Amt advice before you fly.
Sri Lanka and the Maldives
A short Maldives add on is possible inside a double entry ETA window. It is a separate flight from CMB, not a road trip. We handle the Sri Lanka land portion; you book the island hop with an airline or Maldives operator.
Euro, rupees and daily costs
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). “Sri Lanka euro” and “euro sri lanka rupees” searches want a rough idea, not a live bank rate. Carry a card plus a modest cash buffer; ATMs in towns are common. We quote private tours clearly so you are not guessing the euro to rupee split for driver, hotels and park tickets. Airport exchange is often worse than a bank or reputable changer in Colombo or Negombo. We do not sell forex.
Language in Sri Lanka
Sinhala and Tamil are official languages. English is widely used in tourism, hotels and with chauffeur guides. German speaking planning is available on WhatsApp before you fly; your driver guide on the road is typically English speaking unless booked otherwise.
