Bentota, Sri Lanka: West Coast Beach Holidays and River Mouth
Bentota is a classic west coast strip of sand, river and resort hotelspopular with German travellers who want swimming close to Colombo plus an easy link south to Galle, Mirissa and Weligama on a private itinerary.
When Bentota works
The west coast is typically at its best from about November to April: calmer seas and the busiest hotel season. From May the southwest monsoon can mean rain and rough water; then the east coast (Trincomalee) is often the better swim. A private driver can change the beach finale if the forecast turns.
Beach, river and nearby stops
Swimming and water sports on the open coast, quieter pockets near the river mouth, brief turtle hatchery visits (choose a reputable project), and day trips to Galle Fort. Bentota is infrastructure heavy compared with Hiriketiyauseful for families who want pools and longer beaches.
On a round tour
Typical pattern: culture and hills first, then two or three Bentota or Hikkaduwa nights before CMB. Combining Bentota with a full south coast hop (Mirissa, Weligama) in one week costs driving timepick one beach base unless you have 10 to 14 days.

Is Bentota good in the European summer?
Often not for swimming: May to September is the west coast monsoon window. Use the east coast or Cultural Triangle instead, or accept mixed beach weather.
Bentota or Mirissa?
Bentota is closer to Colombo and more resort oriented. Mirissa suits whale watching (Nov to Apr) and a livelier south coast village feel.
