Weligama, Sri Lanka: Beginner Surf and south coast Bay

Weligama bay and surf beach on Sri Lanka’s south coast

Weligama sits on the south coast between Galle and Mirissa. German search interest has risen because the bay is one of the island’s most reliable beginner surf beaches, with a fishing town feel and an easy tuk tuk or chauffeur hop to Mirissa whale watching and Galle Fort.

Why surfers and first timers pick Weligama

The long, relatively gentle beach break suits lessons and longboard days when the southwest monsoon is off (roughly November to April). It is less horseshoe intimate than Hiriketiya and less whale harbour than Mirissaa working bay with stilt fishermen nearby and guesthouses behind the sand.

Combine with Mirissa and Galle

Mirissa is 10 to 15 minutes along the coast for boats in whale season. Galle Fort is a comfortable half day. Many private tours use Weligama as the beach base instead of splitting nights across three south coast towns.

Season

Best with the south coast dry window. In the southwest monsoon, surf can be punchier and rain more frequentthen consider the east coast or keep Weligama short.
